DIY Spray Painted Hat

Sometimes it can be impossible to find a hat base or fascinator in the colour you want. At times like these, spraypaint is a great solution. Sinamay can be spray painted quite easily. Our craft floor stocks Montana 94 Spray Paint in an array of shades so you're bound to find the colour for you.

This tutorial will show you how easy it is to custumise the colour of your sinamay hats using spray paint.

To make this hat you will need:

Round sinamay hat base

Large sinamay hat brim

Needle and thread

Spraypaint in your chosen colour

Sinamay flower

Feather fan

Metal Alice Band

Ivory sinamay is the best colour to use if you are going to use spraypaint on it as even light colours will show up well.

First, you will need to manipulate the hat brim into the shape you want and stitch it onto the round base. The spraypaint could crack or chip if you bend your sinamay after spraying it, this is why you need to shape your hat first.

You will need some smaller sized spray caps to be able to spraypaint the folds in the hat brim. When spraypainting, make sure you are in a well ventilated area. Hold the can approximately 1 or 2 feet away from the hat to avoid the paint clogging up the holes in the sinamay. If this does happen, you can pierce the sinamay with a needle to remove the paint.

Allow the spray paint to dry. If you need to you can add a second coat.

Next, take some of the petals from your sinamay flower and spray paint these to match the hat base. The petals can then be glued to the hat base to embellish the piece and also to cover your stitches from attaching the brim.

Remove a few feathers from your feather fan and attach these to your hat using a glue gun.

Lastly, stitch your finished hat onto the metal alice band.

Now your hat is complete!
