Description

During the Irish War of Independence (1919-1921), Cork earned for itself a reputation as one of the most violent counties in the country. Kinsale, however, was typically identified as a pro-British town, with a population hostile to nationalist aspirations. In fact, Denis Collins (Old Court, Ballinspittle) described Kinsale as ‘the most loyal town in the British Empire’. But does this fact necessitate a complete lack of independence supporters in Kinsale?

This publication peels back the surface layers of Kinsale in the early 20th century, revealing the neglected reality of hundreds of men and women from Kinsale district who sought an Irish Republic. Their stories reveal remarkable dedication, hardship and courage and the complexities of waging a war for Irish freedom in a centuries old British garrison town. In particular, the significance of cultural nationalism and the fundamental role of women comes to the fore.

'Don’t forget me now’ – Stories from the War of Independence in Kinsale is an important commemoration of our revolutionary ancestors during the centenary of the War of Independence. For the first time, the experiences and faces of the local people who contributed to our country’s freedom are given centre stage, ensuring their stories are not forgotten.

The book totals 495 pages, including over 100 photographs and 500 names of local men and women involved in the Irish War of Independence. Also featuring a Foreword written by local historian Fergal Browne.
